In this article, we hope to provide you with all the information you need to help you to choose the right size of swim socks for you. It is based on our extensive experience at our Ambleside shop in fitting our customers with neoprene socks for swimming. Before we go into the different models we stock, let’s talk about general fit first.
A neoprene swimming sock should feel very snug when it is on and before it gets wet – remember when neoprene gets wet, it expands slightly. If the sock just slips on easily like a normal sock, then it is probably too big.
Swim Socks – Swim the Lakes Models
We have 4 different models of swim socks and all of them are intended for cold water swimming and to protect the feet whatever the season, although they differ significantly in their design, construction and warmth offering. They all have a basic, flexible sole to protect the neoprene and provide grip, but they are designed for swimming not walking:
- C-Skins Legend 4mm Warm Lined Swim Socks – exceptionally good value for money, a bit agricultural looking, but warm and tough at 4mm. Good fit for broad feet and perfect for winter swimming.
- Zone 3 Neoprene Heat Tech Warm Swim Socks – a great winter sock. Very well made, with sealed seams, 3.5mm neoprene, a long cuff, and Velcro fastening.
- Zone 3 Neoprene Swim Socks – a 2mm neoprene sock and very well put together with a long neoprene cuff with Velcro closure. Good for cooler months at the end of summer and early spring, and also during the summer season for swimmers who want to protect their feet. Good for narrower feet.
- Blueseventy Thermal Swim Socks – a well-made, ergonomic 2mm neoprene sock with an extra warm Zirconium liner (a bit like man-made wool) that works really well. Good for cooler months at the end of summer and early spring, winter swimming if you have tough feet, also great for year-round protection when swimming too. Work well as socks under shoes for cycling and late-season swim-running too.
C-Skins Swim Sock Size
C-Skins have recently updated their sizing to match standard shoe sizes. Which is a relief! All you really need to do is to order your standard shoe size, but Sizes 4, 5, 6 do come up quite small, so you are a size 4, 5 or 6, we would suggest ordering the next size up e.g. if you are a size 4, please order a size 5 sock.
The fit of the C-Skins Legend Sock suits normal to broad feet. The toe is nicely rounded and they are very comfortable to wear, the fit around the ankle is very good too and the socks stay up very well even when not being worn with a wetsuit.
They are an effort to get on until you have used them a few times, but persevere as the fit in the water improves as the neoprene stretches.
Zone 3 Swim Sock Size
Zone 3 Swim Socks size chart is below, however, we tend to find they are a bit on the roomy side. We often find the Z3 socks are more like: XS = 4-5, Small = 6 -7, Med = 8-9, Large = 10 – 11, XLarge = 12+
Blueseventy Swim Sock Size
The Blueseventy swim sock sizing is made quite simple by the fact that there are only two sizes to choose from, Small or Large. Small fits UK size 4-8 and Large fits UK size 9-12.
Whichever swim sock you choose we hope they add to your swimming experience and allow you to stay in the water doing what you love, for longer. Remember to wear your swim socks underneath your wetsuit, just put them on before you put your wetsuit on.
