SWIM FOR CHILDREN IN WAR – A Virtual Swimming Event
Swim the Lakes director Andrea Kelly launched, what she believes to be the first virtual swimming event that you can take part in anywhere, in January 2017.
The challenge, in aid of Save the Children, is to swim a 10k swimming marathon, indoors or outdoors whenever you can from the 1st January to be completed by 31st January. It costs £20 plus fees to resister for the challenge and participants are encouraged to log their swims, distance and share their experience with others using the challenge website and the Swim for Children in War Facebook group.
After completion of the challenge all registered participants will receive a specially designed ‘Swim For Children in War’ badge.
Andrea said ‘Millions of children are caught up in war zones and they desperately need our help, this is one way we can help make a difference, children urgently need food, water, warmth and medicine just to survive, many are alone and all are in urgent need, please sign up to this challenge, the virtual event is perfect as it keeps costs low so more of the funds raised can go direct to charity’.
Participants will be able to share their swims and log their distance on the EtchRock platform, Andrea hopes swimmers will arrange meet ups and do some swims together.
‘The swimming community is amazing’ she said, ‘I’m sure swimmers will arrange there own Swims and Swim For Children In War together’.
Lake District based adventure swimming company Swim the Lakes are supporting the challenge.
‘If you need some motivation to get in the pool more, to get swimming outdoors or to kick start your New Years resolution then this is the perfect challenge’ said Andrea, who has set a fundraising target of £5000.
