The Stickle Tarn Mountain Swim with Swim the Lakes
The Stickle Tarn Mountain swim takes you to a very special place in more ways than one; this is a swim for those who love the mountains as much as they do their wild swimming. With a spectacular walk-in up the scrambles and falls of Stickle Gill and the unmatched backdrop of Pavey Ark, this is a swim that you simply have to do at some point in your life.
Brief Itinerary: We meet in the Great Langdale Valley at 9am at the car park near the bottom of Stickle Gill, we’ll be hiking up the gill to the tarn above. It is a steep but very rewarding walk-in with superb views of the valley below as well as the surrounding fells.
After our swim of about 1 – 1.5k in this dramatic high tarn we’ll be hopping and skipping back to the valley floor full of endorphin’s and no trip to the Lake District mountains would be complete without a visit to a traditional Lakeland pub so we’ll treat you to a swift half in the local hostelry, all part of the service :).
Exact meeting place, venue and itinerary will be confirmed upon booking.

How fit do I need to be for this Wild Swim?
For this adventure swim please ensure that you are able to swim continuously for at least 1,000m in open water before booking. Confidence in water is essential, though beginners to wild swimming are welcome. There will be approximately 3 hours (group dependant) of challenging walking on steep and uneven tracks and trails to get to our tarn venue.
The swims and walking will be easy-moderate paced despite the challenging nature of the route, with an emphasis on enjoying the journey and surroundings. We aim to satisfy the swimming aspirations of all of our guests without any compromise in your safety.
How far will we swim and hike?
Swim distances are given here as an indication of our plans for the day, we would encourage you to do as much swimming as you like but there is always an easier option for those who prefer! This swim in the tarn is up to 1.5km long. The walk between lakes includes 3km along rough and steep tracks so please make sure that you come prepared, including the obligatory attire for any Lake District adventure – good quality waterproofs, warm layers and sturdy footwear.
