Trip Description

Wasdale is one of our favourite places in the Lake District and has a fascinating local heritage as well as an important historical link to British mountaineering. Mountain lovers will feel right at home here and with great mountains comes great opportunities to swim too. The valley is littered with glittering tarns and hidden dubs with Wastwater, the deepest lake in England as the jewel in the crown, yet very few swimmers have discovered this area. Even the drive there is an adventure… you have been warned;)

This adventure swim takes in the 10km circumference of Wastwater, our deepest lake, as well as some wonderful tarn swims the following day. All swimming is dependent on weather conditions on the day but we guarantee that we will maximise your time in the water and make it a trip to remember.

Swimming here is a very special experience and the water is so clear that the visibility is 20m+ and is of exceptional quality, even for the Lake District, and the mountain weather can spice things up nicely – anything can happen. You can have glassy calm swimming-heaven one moment with the surrounding fells reflected perfectly on a mirrored surface, and the next it could be like swimming in a washing machine!

Whatever the conditions you will be in safe hands with the experienced Swim the Lakes Crew operating in their natural habitat.

Swim Ability & Fitness Level: Suitable for confident swimmers who can comfortably swim  at-least 8km or more in open water. Moderate fitness level necessary, and the tarn swimming journey involves moderate hill walking over typical Lake District terrain. A full itinerary will be sent to you upon booking.

What’s included:

  • Qualified & experienced swimming guides and mountain leaders will accompany you on our swims and the walks.
  • A bright Swim the Lakes swim cap.
  • Comfortable hostel style accommodation, drying room, bar and games room.
  • All meals included: 2 course dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, packed lunch on Saturday and Sunday and hearty breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Tea & coffee are available throughout the day from the kitchen.
  • In-water drinks and cake (of course!).
  • Parking at the accommodation is free.

See the Itinerary, Accommodation & Reviews tabs on the left for more information.

Written on the banks of Wastwater, During a calm

Is this the lake, the cradle of the storms,  Where silence never tames the mountain-roar,  Where poets fear their self-created forms,  Or, sunk in trance severe, their God adore?

Is this the lake, for ever dark and loud  With wave and tempest, cataract and cloud?  Wondrous, O Nature! is thy sovereign power,  That gives to horror hours of peaceful mirth;  For here might beauty build her summer-bower!

Lo! where yon rainbow spans the smiling earth,  And, clothed in glory, through a silent shower  The mighty Sun comes forth, a godlike birth;  While, ‘neath his loving eye, the gentle Lake  Lies like a sleeping child too blest to wake!  John Wilson

BLOOMING AMAZING!!!!! Sums this weekend up well I reckon. I was apprehensive booking as a single. I need not have been. This group of inspirational people from all over the UK seemed to bond straight away. I have never felt such a love for swimming amongst such a group of individuals . It was wonderful to be a part of such a weekend. We started with an acclimatisation swim and the water felt fabulous. Facilities and food at the YHA was fantastic and encouraged the team theme ! I had the best swim of my life in Wastwater on Saturday. It was a massive challenge and I am quite sure without the support of everyone I would not have done it.
We enjoyed some great hiking, hardly noticed that everything ached as the views were so rewarding! The team were not deterred by the less clement weather on Sunday as everyone stripped down to skinz or wetsuits.
I feel very privileged to have been part of this event and really cannot thank our leaders, Pete, Tors and Steve for organising this event so well. I felt completely safe yet comfortably challenged!! You also are the provider of the best cake and hot chocolate I have ever tasted.
Thanks so much to you all
    Kate

ITINERARY

Our swim adventure begins on the the afternoon of day one with informal introductions, full briefing, a quick change and a fabulous acclimatisation swim in Wastwater. followed by a hot shower before dinner is served.

Each day will be arranged according to the weather and group aspirations, but we guarantee that it will be a lot of fun and packed with swimming opportunities, with just the right amount of challenge for you.

Our second day we get stuck into Wastwater proper. We plan to swim the whole shore of Wastwater (weather permitting), a round trip of 10km. This is a big swim in one of the most dramatic swimming venues in Britain fully supported by our friendly swim guides.

On day three we make the most of the tarn swimming opportunities that Wasdale has to offer, enjoying some classic Lake District walking and of course lakeside/tarnside tea and cake along the way while we admire the views.

Our aim is to give you the option to swim as much as you like so that you can make the most of our Lake District wild swimming venues. If you feel like kicking back and taking a break from the swimming, there are hot drinks at the hostel plus the excellent Wasdale Head Inn up the road if you fancy something stronger!
