Swim Description
The Wordsworth Wild Swim takes us to the very heart of the Vale of the Lake District Poets. It is easy to see why Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey found so much solace and inspiration here. You can’t fail to notice the beauty of the surrounding vale when you are looking up at it from the waters of Grasmere and Rydal.
After meeting and an initial briefing, we take a stroll along easy tracks to Grasmere for our first swim (about 1,600m). Grasmere is a lovely swim with easy shelving entry, deep water, and playful perch swimming in the margins. After a refuel and another stroll, we slip into the Rothay river to swim into Rydal Water and go with the flow, swimming around Heron Isle and back (about 1,600m).
This is a good introduction to adventure swimming in the Lake District and will suit anyone who has already had a taste of what open water swimming is all about and wants more.
Swim Ability & Fitness:
The Wordsworth Wild Swim is perfect for beginners & intermediate outdoor swimmers with a good level of swimming fitness. You do need to be a competent outdoor swimmer who can comfortably swim a mile in open water. We will attempt to satisfy the swimming aspirations of all of our guests without any compromise in your safety.

Thank you Pete and Sarah for an amazing day. My first Open Water Swimming and through Swim The Lakes’ experience, expertise, guidance and encouragement I managed to swim 1600 metres in beautiful Grasmere. If you are even just mildly tempted, go and speak to Pete Kelly and get booked up. I’m looking forward to a night swim next. Martin Bell.
