Trip Description

Our Loughrigg, Lakes & Lilies swim is one of our most popular Adventure Swim Days. It has just the right mix of swimming and walking and is a relaxing way to enjoy the best of Lake District wild swimming in our favorite and most frequented swimming locations. Set in the Vale of the Lake District Poets this classic low level walk links tarn, lake and dub swimming to offer you an outdoor swimming experience that will make you smile whenever you remember it.

We’ll enjoy all that the Lakes and the surrounding fells have to offer, with picnicking  and tea drinking between swims. Don’t worry about your speed or style; swim, explore and soak up the views above and below the water. If you want to go for a shorter swimming option or just stay on the beach and soak up the surroundings, feel free.

Your guides are experienced open water swimmers, safety kayakers and qualified lifeguards, who are keen to share their knowledge of the local area and give swimming tips to enhance your outdoor swimming experience.

Swim Ability & Fitness: Please ensure that you can swim continuously for at least 1000m (40 x 25m) in a pool and we recommend some previous wild swimming experience. The swims will be easy-moderate paced with an emphasis on enjoying the journey and surroundings. Moderate walking fitness essential.

The route includes 8km (5 miles) of easy walking over uneven tracks and undulating trails and between 1,500m-3,5oom of swimming throughout the day (the longest swim being the swim the the Island on Grasmere which is about 1,700m… you can have a rest on the island!).

How far will we swim and hike?

Swim distances are given here as an indication of swimming potential only, we would encourage you to do as much or as little swimming as you like! The walk between lakes includes rough tracks so please make sure that you come prepared, including the obligatory attire for any Lake District adventure – good quality waterproofs and footwear.

The walking route that links our swims covers a distance of 8 km along undulating, tracks and trails typical of Lake District walking.

Some interesting facts:

Dove Cottage on the edge of Grasmere was the first family home of Britain’s greatest poet, William Wordsworth. He lived here 1799 – 1808, moving into the former pub initially with his sister. Settling in this enchanting place in the heart of his ‘native mountains’ meant that he was able to concentrate on writing and this period was his most inspired and productive.
